Description
Antique Victorian ivory ladies’ bust on ebony-bodied figure – likely parasol or walking stick handle – England, ca. 1860–1890
Elegant and decorative antique figurine from the Victorian period, executed as a finely carved female bust. The face is made of ivory, while the body and clothing are carved from dark wood (likely ebony or dark-stained wood). The contrast between the light ivory and the dark wood gives the object a particularly aesthetic and luxurious character.
The bust shows a woman with a hood and a richly detailed collar, inspired by historical Renaissance or Baroque fashion. The facial features are finely carved with a soft expression and a carefully worked hairstyle. Small ivory ornaments on the headpiece enhance its decorative character.
Objects of this type were produced in the second half of the 19th century as luxury accessories or handles for parasols or walking sticks, but were also collected as curiosities and decorative objects. The combination of ivory and dark wood is common in Victorian craftsmanship from England.
